Description

Oil Seals (also called a shaft seal, lip seal, or rotary shaft seal) is a device used to seal the interface between a rotating shaft and a stationary housing. Its job is to:

  1. Retain lubricant (oil or grease) inside the component (e.g. gearbox, hub, engine)

  2. Prevent ingress of contaminants such as dirt, dust, water, and debris

  3. Maintain pressure differential, ensuring that lubricant doesn’t leak even under pressure

  4. Protect bearings and internal parts from wear, corrosion, and contamination https://sumku.co.ke/

Basic Structure & Components

Typical oil seals consist of:

  • Sealing lip(s): the flexible portion that contacts the shaft and makes the dynamic sealing line

  • Garter spring: applies consistent radial force to the lip to maintain contact with the shaft https://sumku.co.ke/

  • Metal or elastomeric case / shell: provides rigidity and helps the seal be pressed into the housing bore

  • Dust / secondary lip(s): (in multi-lip designs) provide extra protection by blocking contaminant ingress https://sumku.co.ke/

The materials for the lip typically include nitrile rubber (NBR), Viton / FKM, polyacrylate, or even PTFE for specific high-performance applications.

What to Check When Selecting Oil Seals

Here are key factors to ensure a seal that will last and perform well:

  1. Correct dimensions:

    • Inner diameter (shaft size)

    • Outer diameter (bore size)

    • Thickness / height of seal body

  2. Shaft surface condition:

    • Smoothness (surface finish)

    • Hardness

    • No burrs or damage — these can severely reduce seal life. https://sumku.co.ke/

  3. Operating temperature expected in the application. High temps demand better materials (FKM, PTFE).

  4. Fluid compatibility: What oil / grease / fluid will be sealed in. Some seals can degrade if exposed to certain additives, chemicals, water, etc.

  5. Rotational speed & pressure: High RPMs or certain pressures require more robust lip design, sometimes double lip, or special materials. https://sumku.co.ke/

  6. Environmental conditions: exposure to dirt, water, dust, heat, corrosive agents. If very dirty or wet, sch a double-lip or dust lip is often necessary.

  7. Installation quality: proper fit into bore, avoid damaging lip, use correct orientation (spring side toward fluid usually), ensure shaft and bore are clean and properly lubricated
