Description
Front Hub Oil seal (also called a wheel hub seal) is a sealing component placed between the wheel hub / wheel bearing assembly and the axle shaft. Its job is to:
- Keep the grease or lubricant inside the hub/bearing area
- Prevent contaminants (water, dust, dirt) from entering
- Maintain proper lubrication for the bearings
- Help protect against premature wear and bearing failure
In many heavy trucks, the hub can also contain planetary gear assemblies or wheel drive mechanisms, making the seal even more critical.
Seal Components & Design Features
A typical front hub oil seal includes:
- Outer metal shell / case — Presses into the hub bore
- Elastomeric (rubber) sealing lip — Contacts the rotating shaft
- Spring (garter spring) — Helps maintain radial pressure on the lip
- Dust lip / secondary lip — Provides extra protection against dirt ingress
- Materials — Usually NBR (nitrile rubber), sometimes FKM/Viton or other high-performance rubbers for better temperature/chemical resistance
Installation & Replacement Tips
- Clean the hub bore and the shaft thoroughly of debris or old sealant.
- Use a seal driver tool of correct diameter to press the seal in squarely.
- Be careful not to damage the lip or the spring when installing.
- Lightly coat the lip with clean hub grease to facilitate startup.
- Check for leaks after driving and re-torque wheel nuts as needed.
