Description
Wheel studs are threaded metal fasteners that are permanently mounted to a vehicle’s hub, designed to secure the hub using lug nuts.
🛠️ Function of Wheel Studs:
Serve as the anchoring point for wheels.
Allow lug nuts to tighten and clamp the wheel firmly against the brake rotor/drum and hub.
Provide safe and balanced rotation of the wheel.
Key Specifications:
Thread size (e.g., M12×1.5, 1/2″-20 UNF)
Length (standard or extended)
Knurl diameter (must match the hub hole)
Material: Usually hardened steel, zinc-coated for corrosion resistance
🚛 Types of Wheel Studs:
Press-in Studs
Most common; Pressed into the hub or axle flange from the rear side
Screw-in Studs; Threaded into the hub (used in some aftermarket and racing applications
🔧 When to Replace
Damaged or stripped threads
Cross-threading during lug nut installation
Over-torqued or sheared-off studs
Vibration due to loose/damaged
Common Issues:
Cross-threading from careless lug nut installation
Over-torquing with impact guns
Corrosion in harsh climates (road salt, moisture)
Stud breakage can cause wheel separation, a serious safety hazard
Important Notes:
Torque lug nuts evenly in a star pattern to avoid stress or damage to studs.
Using anti-seize is not generally recommended on threads—it may alter torque readings.
Always replace a damaged stud with one that has the same thread pitch and knurl diameter.
