Description

Clutch Plate (also called a clutch disc) is one of the main components of a vehicle’s manual transmission clutch system.
It’s mounted between the flywheel and the pressure plate, and its main job is to transmit power from the engine to the gearbox smoothly.

Main Functions
Power Transmission: When the clutch is engaged, the clutch plate is pressed tightly between the flywheel and pressure plate, transferring engine torque to the gearbox input shaft.
Power Interruption: When you press the clutch pedal, the pressure plate releases the clutch plate—breaking the connection so gears can be changed.
Shock Absorption: It smooths out sudden changes in engine speed or torque using damping springs built into the plate.
Vibration Control: The friction lining and springs help reduce vibrations for a smoother drive.

Clutch Plate Construction
Component Description
Hub Splined center part that fits onto the gearbox input shaft.
Friction linings Special material (organic, ceramic, or metallic) that grips the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces.
Cushion plate Adds flexibility for smoother engagement.
Rivets / retainers Hold all components together securely.

Types of Clutch Plates
Single Plate Clutch One friction disc (common in cars and light trucks). Passenger & light commercial vehicles.
Multi-Plate Clutch Several plates for higher torque transfer. Heavy trucks, buses, racing vehicles.
Ceramic / Kevlar Clutch Plate High-friction, heat-resistant materials. Performance & heavy-duty applications.
Organic Clutch Plate Smooth engagement, lower noise. Regular vehicles.

Signs of a Worn Clutch Plate
Slipping clutch (engine revs increase but vehicle speed doesn’t).
Burning smell during acceleration.
Jerky or hard gear shifts.
Shuddering when releasing the clutch.
Difficulty engaging gears.

Maintenance Tips
Avoid resting your foot on the clutch pedal (causes premature wear).
Don’t ride the clutch in traffic or on hills.
Replace the clutch plate together with the pressure plate and release bearing for best performance.
